MN Governor Slashes Spending As State Revenues Drop

Minnesota cities, towns and local governments will recieve a lump of coal from Governor Tim Pawlenty the day after Christmas.  The Governor, who has refused to raise taxes on the state’s wealthiest people, has decided to not send out checks to local governments to help them pay for essentials such as payroll, police officers and fire protection.

Governor Pawlenty announced the cuts less than a week before the checks are due to be sent out, causing local governments to scramble to figure out how they will pay the bills.  The cuts are part of $271 million in state spending cuts the Governor made on Friday in an attempt to wipe out the state’s growing budget deficit.
