Clean Energy Groups pledge to stop Coal Plant progress

On Thursday, January 15th 2009 the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission voted 5-0 to approve a certificate of need for the utilities planning on building the Big Stone II coal power plant in eastern South Dakota. The certificate will allow the utilities to build a power line into MN the coal plant requires. Clean energy groups say the fight isn’t over and will contest the decision. In 2007, MN Governor Tim Pawlenty signed into law a renewable energy requirement for 25% of the electricity produced by the state’s utilities to come from renewable sources by 2025.
