MN Senate Eliminates Mandatory “Truth In Taxation” Hearings For Local Governments

Every year the state requires local governments to hold a “truth in taxation” hearing for property tax payers.  It allows homeowners to question and challenge the taxes they are accessed on their homes.

As part of a proposal to cut costs, DFL Senator Tom Bakk wants to remove the state mandate to have such a meeting.  Local governments can still have the meeting, but it doesn’t have to be a special meeting just for this purpose.

An amendment, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader David Senjem, R-Rochester, that would require the hearings to be continued failed on a 23-40 vote.   Video of the debate provided by Senate Media Services.   The bill number is SF 3.
