First Congressional Hearing From Space

The testifiers weren’t in the Senate hearing room. They weren’t even in this world. For the first time, a congressional hearing to testimony from space. The astronauts aboard the space shuttle Atlantis spoke to a Senate subcommittee on NASA’s budget.


Committee chair Sen Barbara Mikulski told the astronauts “Not only did you give Hubble a new life, you’re going to give the Senate a new lease on life.”


“I wish I were up there with you,” said Sen. Bill Nelson, who flew on the shuttle in 1986.
