Progressive Caucus Leader Ellison Preaches Interfaith Commonalities


Keith Ellison (representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District), the first Muslim elected to the US Congress, was the featured speaker at the Westminster Forum at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis yesterday. Ellison talked about the commonalities of major faiths and how little substantive difference there is. Ellison, a leader of the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives, talked about focusing on the total needs of all peoples and avoiding bombastic divisive speech.

In addition to shooting videos for The UpTake, Jacob Wheeler is a contributing editor at the progressive political magazine In These Times, publishes the Glen Arbor Sun in his native Michigan, and authored "Between Light and Shadow," a recent book about the Guatemalan adoption industry. Wheeler's stories have appeared in such magazines as the Utne Reader, Earth Island Journal, Rotarian and Teaching Tolerance magazine, and newspapers including the San Francisco Chronicle and Christian Science Monitor. He speaks fluent Spanish, German and Danish.
