During her interview with The UpTake at Netroots Nation yesterday, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said that the Pentagon is the only agency within the federal government that can’t pass an audit. In fact, the Pentagon hasn’t been audited for decades. Schakowsky said that the U.S. military could easily cut its wasteful spending without hurting active duty personnel. Doing so would mean not just phasing out old weapons but closing down unused military bases.
Schakowsky also said that the resurgent labor movement this winter and spring have helped Americans put faces to these middle-class public employees. “People get it that the middle class is under siege.”
