1) FIREARM-RELATED DATA COLLECTION BILL
A bill for an act allowing the Department of Health to collect information on firearm ownership for the purpose of public health research, co-authored by Rep. Erin Murphy, RN, and Senator Matt Klein, MD. Current state law prohibits the Commissioner of Health to collect certain gun-related data for any reason. This bill will modify the statute to allow such data collection for the sole purpose of public health research. The data must be de-identified before disclosure to any person or agency.
2) TRAUMA-INFORMED GUN VIOLENCE REDUCTION BILL
A bill establishing a pilot program to address trauma resulting from gun violence, co-authored by Rep. Fue Lee and Senator Jeff Hayden. This bill directs the commissioner of health to establish a pilot program to aid in the reduction of trauma resulting from gun violence and address the root causes of gun violence by providing resources, training, and education. $100,000 will be appropriated in fiscal year 2019 from the general fund for this purpose. Trauma is an important contributing factor in both suicides and homicides.
