It’s not often that Minnesota has an open congressional seat. Rarer yet does it happen in a swing district where Democrats and Republicans stand about an even chance of getting elected. But that’s exactly the case in Minnesota’s second congressional district, where Rep. John Kline has decided not to seek another term.
The five announced Republican candidates who would like to replace Kline had their first extended debate on Thursday at the Gateway Christian Church in Inver Grove Heights.
Debating were former talk show host Jason Lewis, former state Senator John Howe, former state Representative Pam Myhra, David Gerson (who ran against Kline two years ago) and a newcomer to the race, David Benson-Staebler.
