Today, representatives from Common Cause Minnesota (Mike Dean), the League of Women Voters (Laura Fredrick Wang), and the Citizens for Election Integrity Minnesota (Mark Halvorson) announced their intent to observe the impending 2010 gubernatorial recount. As nonpartisan observers, they intend to make sure the electoral process is carried out fairly and impartially, according to a press release. “Nonpartisan means we don’t have a dog in this fight at all,” explained Mike Dean, executive director of Common Cause.
Dean outlined the number of election safeguards Minnesota uses, and said the state is a national model for election administration and citizen ownership. While any claims of fraud call for investigation and review, Dean said, it’s more likely for someone to be struck by lightning than for voting fraud to exist in Minnesota.
