North Carolina Braces For Hurricane Earl

(Carteret County, North Carolina) Coast Guard officials are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. They’re making last minute repairs to boats and putting unneeded equipment under cover. Coast Guard officials are warning anyone thinking of using the beach this holiday weekend to be extra careful. Captain Anthony Popiel of the US Coast Guard said “Especially during Labor Day, the last blast of Summer. We’re going to have a lot of visitors coming to the Crystal Coves, The Outer Banks and we really need the visitors to stay on the beach, stay out of the water and stay safe.”

Baby Whale May Be Killed

A baby Sperm whale will likely be euthanized because it appears to be injured and its mother can not be found. The nine-foot whale was spotted at the Miami Beach Marina on Tuesday around mid-day. The Miami Herald reports:
Injured in the head, dorsal area and tail flukes, the calf might have been hurt by a boat, said Liz Tuohy-Sheen, assistant stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s southeast region. Orphaned and in poor health, the decision was made to euthanize the whale, said Shelley Dawicki, spokeswoman for NOAA fisheries. But then the calf swam out the marina and into Biscayne Bay making it difficult to safely euthanize it, Dawicki said.
