Bonoff Criticizes Newman for Not Knowing His Legislative Assistant

Though Minnesota Republican State Senator Scott Newman was absolved during ethics hearings late Wednesday night for a controversial email his legislative assistant Kim Kelley sent to the Minnesota Nurses Association on Jan. 20 (informing them that they couldn’t meet with the Senator because they had endorsed his opponent during last November’s election), Newman’s senatorial colleague Terri Bonoff (DFL) implicitly criticized him on Friday for not knowing his legislative assistants well enough, for not training them to avoid such pitfalls, and for not hiring them himself.

News emerged during Wednesday night’s hearings that Republican legislative assistants are hired not by individual Senators or Representatives but by the state GOP caucus. State Deputy Chair Michael Brodkorb told The UpTake over the telephone on Thursday that all questions regarding employees hired by the caucus should come straight to him.
