Betty McCollum at Planned Parenthood

By Bill Sorem
St. Paul, MN, February 24, 2011. 4th CD Congresswoman Betty McCollum visits Rice Street Planned Parenthood Clinic. She speaks clearly and forcefully about the importance of the work Planned parenthood does and the critical assistance it provides to thousands of women in Minnesota, North and South Dakota. Abortion services, a common lightning rod for Planned Parenthood represents but 5% of total services. Current Republican national budget plans call for slashing all Title X funding for Planned Parenthood, part of the ongoing Republican assault on women’s health. McCollum quoted from a recent Washington Post Op Ed stating that, “House Republicans just voted to increase the number of abortions and raise Federal health care costs.” This was not the stated intention but is the consequence of the “dumb cuts,” being proposed. The clinic staff delivered a stack of letters thanking McCollum for her support. The Congresswoman stated that this kind of communication was important to keep these issues top of mind. Reporters ask what she hears from constituents; these letters help keep the balance.
