There won’t be a recount for Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District after all.

Republican Stewart Mills says that “after much consideration, thought and prayer,” he’s decided not to ask for a recount in his race against Rep. Rick Nolan (DFL). Nolan beat Mills by 2,009 votes. Earlier this week, Mills said he would pay for a recount in the race and expected the cost to be near $100,000. He changed his mind, citing the “excessive” cost for doing a recount.

In a press release, Mills said, “instead of spending financial resources to recount votes, I’ve decided to donate a portion of that to the Salvation Army. Also, any donations made to my campaign for a recount will be refunded in full to those individuals or if people choose to, they will be added to my donation to the Salvation Army.”

Mills congratulated Nolan. “We did not agree on everything, but I respect the Congressman, and wish him the best as he moves forward representing the 8th Congressional District.”

The recount would have been a substantial task. 18 counties and the Secretary of State’s office had already set up to do the recount.
